Ed “Moose” Krause was a 6’3″ center who dominated basketball during his era. The three-second rule was adopted in 1932-33, partially in response to Ed’s ability to control the area under the basket.

Krause spent about 50 years associated with the University of Notre Dame as a student athlete, coach, and athletic director. Mr. Notre Dame, as he was sometimes called, was known as an outstanding student, a great athlete, and a gentleman.

Awards and Honors

  • Krause starred in basketball, football, baseball, and track at De La Salle High School in Chicago. He led De La Salle to two national Catholic basketball titles.
  • At Notre Dame, Ed was a three-time All-America selection in basketball. He was also a two-time All-America selection as a tackle on the football team.
  • Ed played basketball in an era when double-digit scoring was a rarity. During his time at Notre Dame, he scored 547 points in three seasons and led the Fighting Irish to a 54-12 record.
  • During his stint as head coach at St. Mary’s College in Minnesota, Krause would barnstorm in basketball for the Duffy Florals. He was paid $50 a game plus 35% of the gate receipts.
  • In 1989, Ed was given the Distinguished American Award given by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame. The award recognized his scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

Points of Interest

  • Krause, known as a gentle giant, got his nickname while playing football in high school. His coach (Norm Barry) yelled at him, saying that he was as big as a moose but that he couldn’t even block boys smaller than he was. The “Moose” nickname stuck.
  • Ed’s most famous shot at Notre Dame was one that he made while on his back. The shot defeated Butler. He later joked that he had been practicing that shot for a long time.
  • In 1942, Krause returned to Notre Dame as an assistant basketball and football coach. After the death of Hall of Fame coach George Keogan, Ed became the head basketball coach at Notre Dame and led them to a 98-48 record during his six seasons.
  • Ed served as the Athletic Director at Notre Dame for 31 years, from 1949-1980.
  • During Krause’s tenure as the AD, the Irish football team played in nine bowl games and won four consensus national championships. The basketball team made the NCAA tournament sixteen times and reached the Final Four in 1978.
