Springfield Quest 2020 – Part 2

By Mark Tully

SpringField Quest 2020

Springfield Quest 2020 has become Springfield Quest 2021. Due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, the Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2020 Induction weekend has been moved to May 14th and 15th in 2021. WE ARE ONLY FIVE DAYS AWAY!! Joshua and I have been planning this trip for over 2 years and the day is fast approaching.

What Players Will Attend? (Update)

In Part 1 of this series I wondered what other players would be attending the weekend that we might be able to meet and interact with. Of course, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Tamika Catchings will be the players being inducted next weekend. There will be a gaping hole in the weekend with the absence of Kobe. I look forward to being there in person when the Hall of Fame honors him. (As I mentioned in my first post, Kobe was very kind to my son and I and signed some cards for us after one of Gianna’s basketball games against my daughter’s school.)

We now know some of the other presenters and award winners that are scheduled to attend the weekend events. The legendary Michael Jordan will be presenting Kobe. Other presenters include David Robinson for Duncan, Isiah Thomas for Garnett, and Alonzo Mourning and Dawn Staley for Catchings. Calvin Murphy and Hakeem Olajuwon will present coach Rudy Tomjanovich. Vlade Divac will be one of the presenters for contributor Patrick Baumann and Sidney Moncrief is one of the presenters for coach Eddie Sutton.

Springfield Quest 2020 – Part 1

SpringField Quest 2020

My son Joshua and I are headed to Springfield, Massachusetts in August of 2020 to witness the induction of the greatest Hall of Fame class in basketball history. At least we hope that we are. This coronavirus pandemic has created uncertainty in so many areas of our lives, and this planned trip is no exception.

My passionate collecting of autographed Hall of Fame basketball cards led me to begin learning about the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. I knew that this was a place that I wanted to visit. I wanted to learn more about the players and the history of my favorite sport, basketball.

A few years ago, Joshua and I started planning for our trip. We wanted to visit during Hall of Fame induction weekend. We knew that this class, featuring Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Tamika Catchings, would go down in history as one of the best ever and we wanted the thrill of being part of it.

Meeting Kobe Bryant

By Mark Tully

On October 10, 2018 my son Joshua and I met Kobe Bryant.

After I moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to Southern California in 1972 I became a life-long Los Angeles Lakers fan. I watched the Lakers through the good times and the bad, although I must say that the good times far outweighed the bad – and they were more frequent.

I witnessed the three-peat that was a Los Angeles team coached by Phil Jackson and led by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe. Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, Ron Harper, Robert Horry, and Brian Shaw were some of the names that I cheered for in those years.

Seven years later, in 2009 and then 2010, I was fortunate to root for my team as the Lakers won two more titles led by Kobe and Pau Gasol. Those teams still included Derek Fisher, but now included Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Trevor Ariza/Metta World Peace.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to five NBA championships and I probably watched every game of those Finals series. So when my 8th grade daughter Katie was scheduled to play a basketball game against the school that 7th grade Gianna Bryant attended, I thought we might have a chance to meet, face-to-face, one of the best to ever play the game.

I told Josh to grab a Kobe card and a Sharpie. I did the same and we headed out to the game. When we entered the gym the 7th grade game was taking place. Katie was playing in the 8th grade game, which was coming up next. I scanned the crowd in the bleachers and yes, there he was. Bryant was sitting alone enjoying the game that Gianna was playing on the court below. I knew better than to interrupt him when his daughter was playing.

James Naismith

By Mark Tully

Over 125 years ago, Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891 when he was 30 years old.  Naismith was a Canadian working as a physical education instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He was tasked by Dr. Luther Gulick with developing an indoor game that would hold the interest of the young men in his physical education classes between football in the fall and baseball season in the spring and summer.

Two previous YMCA instructors had failed in their attempts to create such a game before the task was assigned to Naismith.  Gulick gave him two weeks to develop a game and on the last day he came up with a game that became known as Basket Ball (two words).  In his game teams tossed a soccer ball into peach baskets nailed to posts at opposite ends of a gymnasium.

The players could not run with the ball but had to pass it from one player to another.  It was not until later that dribbling was added to the game.  The baskets were placed ten feet above the floor and there were two 15-minute halves.  After each score a ladder was used to remove the ball from the peach basket and then a jump ball occurred at center court.  The original rules allowed any number of players to play Basket Ball but the first games were played with nine players on each team.

On December 21, 1891 the first basketball game ever was played.  The players on the winning team included William R. Chase, John J. Thompson, Eugene S. Libby, Edwin P. Ruggles, T. Duncan Patton, Frank Mahan, Finlay G. MacDonald, William H. Davis and Lyman Archibald.  The losing team included George Weller, Wilbert Carey, Ernest Hildner, Raymond Kaighn, Genzabaro Ishikawa, Benjamin S. French, Franklin Barnes, George Day and Henry Gelan.  William R. Chase scored the only goal on a shot from about 25 feet away and the game ended 1-0.

2017 Hall of Fame Basketball Class

By Mark Tully

On Saturday, April 1, the Hall of Fame announced eleven people that will be inducted into the hall as a part of the Class of 2017.  Four of those eleven people are being inducted into the Hall of Fame as players.  They are Tracy McGrady, George McGinnis, Nick Galis, and Zack Clayton.  Former player Rebecca Lobo is also being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017 as a contributor.  Here is a look at the four new players that will be inducted this year.

Tracy McGrady

Tracy McGrady, also known as T-Mac, joined the NBA straight out of high school.  He was the ninth overall pick in the first round by the Toronto Raptors in the 1997 NBA Draft.  Tracy played for seven different teams during his NBA career and is the [Read more…] about 2017 Hall of Fame Basketball Class

Hall of Fame Basketball Player Autographs

By Mark Tully

I love to collect Hall of Fame basketball player autographs.

When I was a kid sports card collecting was so simple.  I would walk or ride my bike down to Sunshine, our local family-owned store, and buy a few packs of baseball cards.  The unknown treasures that hid inside of those wax packs called out to me.  I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio in the days (early 1970s) when the Big Red Machine was just coming into existence, so visions of pulling a Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, or Tony Perez danced in my head.

Another aspect of collecting that I enjoyed was trading cards with my friends.  The negotiations could become intense as my friends and I tried to create a deal that would appeal to both of us.  Their was great satisfaction in completing a deal that netted me one of my cardboard heroes.

Sports Cards are Different Now

In the early 1970s the only cards I knew were small pieces of cardboard with a picture of the player on the front and some stats on the back. When I got back into collecting a few years ago I was amazed at some of the sports cards that I saw.  Cards now can have autographs, bat slices, and game-worn uniform swatches right out of the pack.  They come in many different thicknesses.
