Chris Webber, aka “C-Webb”, was an outstanding basketball player who helped redefine the power forward position in the NBA. Although he never won an NCAA title or and NBA championship, Webber was the force that powered his Michigan team to two consecutive NCAA title games. Chris later led a resurgence of the Sacramento Kings that took them to the Western Conference finals where they pushed the Lakers to the limit before falling in seven games.
Awards and Honors
- At Michigan, Webber received First Team All-America honors in 1992-93.
- He was drafted with the first overall selection in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic who immediately traded him to the Golden State Warriors for Penny Hardaway and three first round draft picks.
- In 1993-94, Chris was selected as the NBA Rookie of the Year after a strong showing in his first year with the Golden State Warriors where he averaged 17.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.
- Webber was chosen to an All-NBA team five times and played in five All-Star games in 1997 and 2000-2003.
- Chris was the NBA’s leading rebounder in 1998-99, pulling down 13.0 boards per game.
Points of Interest
- Chris played college basketball for Michigan, where he was the star of the historic “Fab Five” group of freshman who led the Wolverines to the NCAA title game. The five included Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. In 1991-92, they lost in the championship game against the Duke Blue Devils, who were led by Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, and Bobby Hurley. The Fab Five reached the NCAA Final the following year as well, losing to North Carolina.
- The best years of Webber’s career came during his six seasons with the Sacramento Kings. The Kings made the playoffs each of the six seasons that Chris played for them. In 2002, they reached the Western Conference finals where Sacramento, where starters Webber, Peja Stojakovic, Vlade Divac, Doug Christie, and Mike Bibby lost in seven tough games to a Laker team that featured Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and Derek Fisher.
- Chris finished his 15-year NBA career with averages of 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds (nearly a double-double) and 4.2 assists per game.
- The Sacramento Kings retired Webber’s #4 jersey on February 6, 2009.
- Webber was presented to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame by the legendary Charles Barkley and by one of his former basketball camp counselors, Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas.
