Jack Sikma was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics with the eighth pick in the first round of the 1977 NBA Draft. He went on to play fourteen years in the league, nine with the Sonics and five with the Milwaukee Bucks. Sikma was one of the first big men to stretch the floor with his outside shot. He was also an excellent free throw shooter. Jack was a seven-time NBA All-Star and helped lead the Seattle Supersonics to an NBA championship.
Awards and Honors
- Jack played his college basketball at Illinois Wesleyan University where he was named a First-Team NAIA All-American and Academic All-American in both 1976 and 1977.
- Sikma was selected to the 1977-78 NBA All-Rookie team along with Walter Davis, Marques Johnson, Norm Nixon, and Bernard King.
- Jack was named an NBA All-Star in seven consecutive seasons from 1979 through 1985.
- In 1979, Sikma, Dennis Johnson, and Gus Williams led the Seattle Supersonics to the NBA championship. In the Finals, the Sonics defeated the Washington Bullets 4-1.
- Jack was named to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team in 1981-82.
Points of Interest
- In 1987-88, Jack led the NBA in free throw percentage at 92.2%, becoming the only center in NBA history to have done so. He finished his career shooting 84.9% from the charity stripe.
- Sikma’s nickname was “Goldilocks” because of his blonde, sometimes very curly, hair.
- One of the first big men to consistently shoot three-pointers, Jack finished with 203 in his career, 196 of which came during his last three seasons with the Bucks. In those seasons, his three-point shooting percentages were 38.0%, 34.2%, and 34.1%.
- During his NBA career, Jack averaged 15.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.
- Sikma spent 11 years as an assistant coach for the Supersonics, the Houston Rockets, and the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has also worked as a coaching consultant for the Toronto Raptors.
