Lauren Jackson was an international women’s basketball superstar who dominated play in her native Australia, in the WNBA, and on the international stage. She won titles in the WNBA, the WNBL (Australia), the Euroleague, and the World Championships. She also medaled four times in the Olympics. As a result of her incredible basketball career, Lauren became the first Australian player to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Awards and Honors
- An international superstar in women’s basketball, Lauren and her Australian Opals team won three silver medals (2000, 2004, 2008) and one bronze medal (2012) in the Olympics. They also won the world championship in 2006.
- In 2001, Jackson was selected by the Seattle Storm with the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft.
- Jackson was a seven-time WNBA All-Star and a seven-time All-WNBA selection during her twelve year career with the Seattle Storm. She also won the WNBA MVP award three times: in 2003, 2007, and 2010.
- Lauren won two WNBA championships in 2004 and 2010. In 2004 the team was led by Jackson and Sue Bird. In 2010, Jackson, Bird, and Swin Cash led the way to the title with Jackson winning Finals MVP.
- Jackson won four WNBL (Australian League) titles and was named the MVP of each series. She also won three Euroleague titles.
Points of Interest
- Lauren was the youngest WNBA player to score 1,000 points. She achieved this milestone at only 22 years and 27 days old.
- Jackson was a 3x WNBA scoring champ in 2003 (21.2 ppg), 2004 (20.5 ppg), and 2007 (23.8 ppg). In 2007 Lauren was also the WNBA rebounding champion (9.7 rpg) and was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.
- Lauren joined Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes as the only players to win the WNBA MVP award three times.
- Jackson has been a fixture in all of the WNBA all-time teams. She was voted to the All-Decade team in 2006, the Top 15@15 in 2011, the Top 20@20 in 2016, and the W25 in 2021.
- When she was inducted in 2021, Lauren became the first Australian player to be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The only Australian who preceded her was coach Lindsay Gaze, who was enshrined in recognition of his career in 2015. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 border and lockdown restrictions, Jackson was unable to attend her enshrinement.
