Richie Guerin was a very tough player who starred for an average to below average New York Knicks team in the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Prior to the start of his NBA career, Richie spent two years in the Marines where he learned the sacrifice, discipline, and teamwork that would help him to become a perennial All-Star in the league.  A talented scorer, rebounder, and passer, Guerin was one of the best guards of his era.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts over forty years after he retired as a player.  It was an honor he had always hoped for and one that he was happy to share with his family and friends.

  • Richie was selected as an NBA All-Star six consecutive times from 1958-1963.
  • Guerin was chosen by the New York Knicks with the 17th overall selection in the second round of the 1954 NBA Draft.
  • Richie was an All-NBA Second Team selection three times during his career.

  • Richie finished his NBA career with averages of 17.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game.
  • During his thirteen-year NBA career, Richie played for the New York Knicks, St. Louis Hawks, and the Atlanta Hawks.  He became a player-coach and then the coach of the Hawks.  He finished his coaching career with a record of 327 wins and 291 losses and was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year in 1968.
  • In his last two years as the coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Guerin coached the legendary Pete Maravich during his first two years in the NBA.
  • As the player-coach of the St. Louis Hawks, Richie played with and coached fellow Hall of Fame basketball players Bob Pettit, Zelmo Beaty, Cliff Hagan, and Lenny Wilkens.
