Sergei Belov is considered to be one of the top international basketball players of all time. The 6’2″ shooting guard has been called “the Jerry West of Russia” for the presence that he had on the court. Sergei was a skilled ball handler and shooter who led his Soviet teams to many National, European, and club championships.
Awards and Honors
- Sergei starred on the 1972 Soviet Olympic team, which handed the USA its first-ever loss in Olympic basketball competition. The Soviets beat the USA 51-50 in the controversial final game (see video below). Belov scored 20 of the 51 points for his team.
- Belov also won Olympic bronze medals in Mexico in 1968, Montreal in 1976, and Moscow in 1980.
- Sergei won four European Championships with his USSR team. They won in Finland in 1967, Italy in 1969, Germany in 1971, and Italy in 1979.
- Belov’s USSR National Team won the World Championships twice, in 1967 in Uruguay and in Puerto Rico in 1974.
- Sergei won eleven club championships playing in the USSR League.
Points of Interest
- As the final person to carry the Olympic torch, Sergei lit the Olympic Cauldron at the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow.
- Sergei won a silver medal in the World Championships in Manila in 1978 and a bronze medal in the World Championships in Ljubljana in 1970.
- Belov was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame as a player in 2007.
- As a head coach, Sergei led CSKA Moscow and Ural Great Perm to Russian League Championships. He also coached Russia to World Championship silver medals in 1994 and 1998.
- Belov served as the President of the Russian Basketball Federation from 1993-1998.
