Denise Curry was a four-year starter at UCLA. In her freshman year she teamed with fellow Hall of Famer Ann Meyers to win the AIAW national championship. She went on to star at UCLA, to help several USA teams shine in international competitions, and to play professionally in France. After her playing days ended Curry became a college basketball coach.
Awards and Honors
- Denise was a three-time All-American at UCLA.
- She and Ann Meyers led the Bruins to the 1978 AIAW national championship.
- Denise was named the 1981 UCLA All-University Athlete of the Year.
- Curry was a member of two USA teams that played in the Pan American games. Those teams won the silver medal in 1979 and the gold medal in 1983.
- Denise played on the 1984 USA Olympic basketball team which won the gold medal in Los Angeles.
- In her professional career Curry played for Stade Francais and won two French national championships.
Points of Interest
- Denise averaged a double-double at UCLA with 24.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.
- She led the Bruins’ varsity team in scoring in each of her four years at UCLA.
- On February 3, 1990, Curry (#12), Ann Meyers (#15), Bill Walton (#32), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (#33) became the first four UCLA basketball players to have their numbers retired.
- Denise served as head coach of Cal State Fullerton from the 1997-1998 season through the 1999-2000 season. Later she served as an assistant coach for Cal State Long Beach.
- Denise Curry was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, two years after her induction into the Hall of Fame in Springfield.
