Chamique Holdsclaw had a legendary collegiate career at the University of Tennessee under Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt. The 1997-98 team, led by Holdsclaw and Tamika Catchings, went a perfect 39-0 and is considered one of the best teams in the history of women’s college basketball. Holdsclaw went on to a distinguished WNBA career and also won an Olympic gold medal.
Awards and Honors
- Chamique led the Tennessee Lady Vols to three consecutive NCAA Championships (1996, 1997, 1998). She was a four-time AP NCAA All-America selection and was voted the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after the 1997 and 1998 tournaments.
- Chamique was a two-time Naismith College Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999. She finished her time at Tennessee as the all-time leading scorer in the SEC.
- After her stellar college career, Holdsclaw was selected by the Washington Mystics with the first overall selection in the 1999 WNBA Draft. Yolanda Griffith was the second overall selection and Dawn Staley was selected ninth overall in that draft.
- Chamique received the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year award after a productive first season in which she was also voted onto the WNBA Second Team and finished sixth in Most Valuable Player tally.
- Holdsclaw was a six-time WNBA All-Star, with all of those selections occurring in her first seven years in the league.
Points of Interest
- In addition to Holdsclaw, two other Lady Vols, Candace Parker and Tamika Catchings, have been inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame.
- In 2026, when Chamique was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame, she was still Tennessee’s all-time leading scorer with 3,025 points and all-time leading rebounder with 1,295 rebounds.
- Chamique was the WNBA scoring champion in 2002, averaging 19.9 points per game. She also won the league rebounding crown in 2002 and 2003, averaging 11.6 and 10.9 rebounds per game.
- Although she was unable to play due to a foot injury, Holdsclaw was a member of the Team USA squad that took home the gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
- Chamique’s WNBA career spanned eleven seasons. She played for the Mystics, the Los Angeles Sparks, the Atlanta Dream, and the San Antonio Silver Stars. Holdsclaw averaged 16.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists during her career.
