Amar’e Stoudemire was a player known for his tremendous athleticism, his powerful dunks, and his ability to score the basketball. Along with teammate Steve Nash, Stoudemire led the Suns to the Western Conference Finals three times and helped them win at least 54 games during five separate seasons. Amar’e also played for the Knicks, Mavericks, and Heat during his outstanding 14-year NBA career.
Awards and Honors
- During his senior year at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Florida, Amar’e averaged an amazing 29.1 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 6.1 blocks per game. He was named Florida’s Mr. Basketball and was a McDonald’s All-American in 2002.
- Stoudemire won the 2002-03 NBA Rookie of the Year award despite being selected eight spots after number one pick Yao Ming.
- Amar’e was a six-time NBA All-Star and was selected to an All-NBA team five times, including First Team in 2006-07.
- Stoudemire was named NBA Player of the Week eight times and Player of the Month twice between 2004 and 2010.
- In 2003 and 2005 Amar’e competed in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. He finished second in 2005 to Josh Smith despite a perfect score on a twisting dunk assisted by a Steve Nash soccer-style header.
Points of Interest
- Amar’e originally committed to play college basketball at the University of Memphis under legendary coach John Calipari. However, he ended up declaring for the 2002 NBA Draft where he was selected ninth overall in the first round by the Phoenix Suns.
- Although he never won an NBA title, Stoudemire and teammates Steve Nash and Shawn Marion led the Suns to a number of deep playoff runs. Along the way, he and Nash revolutionized the pick-and-roll and made a lasting impact on the way basketball is played in the NBA.
- Amar’e averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds during his NBA career. He retired following the 2015-16 season.
- Following his NBA career, Stoudemire played internationally in Israel and briefly in China. He led his team to the Israeli League Championship in 2017.
- Stoudemire’s presenters at his Naismith Hall of Fame enshrinement included Nash, Mike D’Antoni, Grant Hill, Jerry Colangelo, Rick Welts, and Tracy McGrady.
