Charles “Chuck” Hyatt was one of the top shooters in the early days of basketball. He played three years for the University of Pittsburgh and led them to two national championships. His Pitt teams won 60 games and lost only 7 with Hyatt leading the way. After college he played for the Diamond Oilers, Universal Pictures, and Phillips 66ers in AAU basketball, winning three more national championships.
Awards and Honors
- Chuck led his University of Pittsburgh squad to a National Basketball Championship in 1928 with a 21-0 record. Pittsburgh and Hyatt won the National Championship again in 1930 when the team went 23-2. This was before the advent of the NCAA Championship Tournament in 1939. Pittsburgh’s two championships were by the selection of the Helms Foundation.
- Hyatt was named the Outstanding Player in each of these two championship seasons.
- Chuck led the nation in scoring in 1928 and 1930.
- He was named an NCAA All-American in 1929 and 1930 and was selected as the National Player of the Year in 1930.
- Hyatt had an exceptional AAU career. He was selected as an All-American seven times and won three AAU national championships.
Points of Interest
- Chuck attended Uniontown (PA) High School, graduating in 1926. He was All-State in basketball in 1925 and an All-American in 1926.
- At Pittsburgh, Hyatt led the nation in scoring in 1930 at 12.6 points per game.
- After playing college ball for the Pitt Panthers, Chuck played AAU ball and was chosen as an AAU All-American nine times.
- In the 1930 Championship Game against John “Cat” Thompson and Montana State, Hyatt scored 27 points as his Pittsburgh team won 37-36.
- Chuck Hyatt was inducted into the inaugural class of the Hall of Fame in 1959 along with George Mikan, Hank Luisetti, and John Schommer.
