Dawn Staley has had basketball success at so many levels during her career. She starred in college at Virginia, where she led the team to three appearances in the Final Four. Staley also starred in the ABL and then the WNBA (for the Houston Comets and Charlotte Sting). Internationally, Dawn was part of a dominant United States team which won three consecutive gold medals in the Olympics while she played on the team. Then, as a coach, Staley led Temple University to a number of successful seasons before winning a national championship at South Carolina in 2017. Most recently, Dawn was honored by her selection as the new coach of Team USA, where she will lead the United States into the FIBA World Championships in 2018 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Awards and Honors
- In 1989, Staley won the ACC Rookie of the Year Award while playing college basketball at Virginia. She went on to be selected as a Kodak All-American three times and as the National Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992.
- Dawn led Virginia to three NCAA Final Four appearances during her time at the school.
- Staley was a three-time Olympic gold medalist, helping lead her team to the top prize in Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004. Dawn also was an assistant coach on the gold medal winning teams in 2008 and 2016. Dawn was honored with the opportunity to carry the flag and lead the American delegation into the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
- Dawn was named to the WNBA All-Star team five times during her time in the league.

- Staley started her professional basketball career playing for the Richmond Rage in the ABL. She also played for the Rage in Philadelphia. Then, in the WNBA, Dawn starred for the Houston Comets and the Charlotte Sting.
- During her eight-year WNBA career, Dawn finished in the top six in assists per game each year.
- In 2006 Staley was selected to the WNBA All-Decade Team. That team included fellow Hall of Fame players Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, Katie Smith, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson.
- After her playing career ended, Dawn became the head basketball coach at Temple University. In eight years, Staley led the Owls to the NCAA tournament six times. She later became the head coach at South Carolina. In 2017, the South Carolina Gamecocks won their first NCAA Championship, defeating Mississippi State 67-55 in the title game.
- In 2017, Dawn was named the coach of USA Basketball. In 2018, she will lead Team USA as they compete in the FIBA World Cup in Spain. Then, if they qualify as expected, Staley will lead the team in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
