Harlan “Pat” Page was a slender player known for the tough defense that he played during his college career at the University of Chicago from 1906-1910. A great shooter, Pat helped lead Chicago to great success on the basketball court as a player and then stayed on to coach for them after his playing days ended.

Awards and Honors

  • Page attended college at the University of Chicago where he starred in three sports – baseball, basketball, and football.
  • Pat has the distinction of being the first Chicago player to star on Big Ten championship teams in all three sports. In 1907-08 he was a receiver on the football team, from 1908-10 he was a guard on the basketball team, and in 1909 he was a pitcher on the baseball team. All of these teams won Big Ten championships.
  • Led by Page and John Schommer, Chicago won the national title in 1908 by defeating the University of Pennsylvania.
  • At Chicago, Pat’s teams won Western Conference titles in 1907, 1909, and 1910. They also won a national AAU title in 1907.
  • Page was chosen as the Helms Foundation Player of the Year in 1910.

Points of Interest

  • At Chicago, Pat played under Hall of Fame coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.
  • Page was left-handed shooting guard who was an accomplished scorer for his time. He averaged 10.2 points per game under Coach Stagg in an era of low-scoring games.
  • After his playing career ended, Page coached basketball at Chicago for ten years. He also coached at Butler University, Indiana University, and the College of Idaho. He finished his coaching career with a record of 267-149, a winning percentage of 64.2%.
  • Pat coached Butler to a national AAU title in 1924.
  • When he was finished coaching, Pat served for a few years as a batting practice pitcher with the two Chicago teams, the Cubs and the White Sox.
