Tim Hardaway is remembered for his “killer crossover” and for being a part of the famed Golden State Warriors trio called Run TMC. At only 6’0″, Hardaway’s crossover helped to create space and score more easily in the NBA. Working hard on his “handles” allowed Tim to have the success that he achieved in the league. Hardaway played six years for the Warriors (coached mainly by Hall of Famer Don Nelson) and six years for the Miami Heat (coached by Hall of Famer Pat Riley) and both teams hold an equal place in his heart.
Awards and Honors
- Tim was selected to the 1989-90 NBA All-Rookie First Team along with Vlade Divac, Sherman Douglas, Pooh Richardson, and David Robinson.
- Hardaway was a five-time NBA All-Star, receiving the honor three times while playing for the Golden State Warriors and twice while playing for the Miami Heat.
- Tim made five All-NBA teams. He was selected First Team once, Second Team three times, and Third Team once.
- Hardaway won a gold medal as part of Team USA in 2000 in Sydney, Australia.
- Hall of Famers who presented Tim at his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame included his former college assistant coach Nate Archibald, running mates Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin, high school classmate Yolanda Griffith, and boyhood basketball hero Isiah Thomas.
Points of Interest
- Tim played college basketball at the University of Texas El Paso and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft.
- Tim Hardaway will forever be linked to Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin as a part of the high-scoring trio known as Run TMC which led the Golden State Warriors teams of the early 1990s. The name was inspired by the popular rap music group Run DMC.
- Hardaway froze defenders in their tracks with his incredible crossover dribble, which became know as the UTEP Two-Step. After his playing career ended, he gained satisfaction seeing the impact of his crossover still present in the NBA today.
- Tim finished his 15-year NBA career with averages of 17.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game.
- In the 1997 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Knicks, Hardaway had a breakout Game 7. He scored 38 points, including six 3-pointers and led the Heat into the next round in a game where fellow superstar Alonzo Mourning found himself in foul trouble.
