Slater “Dugie” Martin was only 5’10” tall when he played in the NBA but he was a tenacious defender with the ability to distribute the ball effectively to his teammates. His stellar play contributed to his teams winning five NBA championships.
Awards and Honors
- Slater was a seven-time NBA All-Star from 1953-1959.
- As the point guard he helped guide the Lakers to four championships in 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1954.
- Martin helped lead the St. Louis Hawks to the NBA championship in 1958.
- He was in the top 10 in assists 6 times in his NBA career.
- In his 11-year NBA career Slater averaged 9.8 points and 4.2 assists per game.

- Martin played on two Texas state championship teams at Jefferson Davis High School in Houston.
- Slater was known for his ability to play strong defense against the top guards of his day. These guards included Bob Davies and Bobby Wanzer of the Rochester Royals and Bill Sharman and Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics.
- Martin’s championship Lakers teams included the future Hall of Fame frontcourt of George Mikan at center and Jim Pollard and Vern Mikkelsen at the forward positions.
- His championship St. Louis Hawks team included future Hall of Famers Bob Pettit and Cliff Hagan.
- Slater was inducted into the University of Texas’ Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1962, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1964, and the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1982.
