Joe Dumars was a top defender and effective scorer who helped lead the Detroit Pistons to two NBA titles. Dumars was a hard worker both on and off the court. After his playing career, Joe helped guide the Pistons back to another NBA title as an executive. Dumars made a positive impact on the city of Detroit, the Pistons, and the entire league. He was a player of high character and a class act. The NBA named its Sportsmanship Award trophy after him.
Awards and Honors
- Dumars won two NBA championships with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990. He was a part of the Pistons core that also included Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, and Dennis Rodman.
- Joe was the 1990 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, averaging 27.3 points as the Pistons swept the Los Angeles Lakers 4-0.
- Dumars was a six-time NBA All-Star, all of his selections occurring in an eight-year span from the 1989-90 season through the 1996-97 season.
- Joe made the 1985-86 NBA All-Rookie Team along with Karl Malone and Rookie-of-the-Year Patrick Ewing.
- Known as a great defender, Dumars was chosen to the NBA All-Defensive First Team four times and the All-Defensive Second Team once.
Points of Interest
- Dumars played college basketball at McNeese State University. He averaged 22.5 points per game in his four years at McNeese State and left the school as the 11th leading scorer in NCAA history.
- Joe was selected by the Pistons with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft. This gave him the opportunity to play with Isiah Thomas, the player that he had named as his favorite athlete in the McNeese State media guide.
- Dumars spent hours in the backyard practicing his jump shot on a hoop that his father, Big Joe, constructed out of an old bicycle wheel and part of a wooden door.
- The NBA Sportsmanship Award was first presented after the 1995-96 season and Joe was its first recipient. Today players who win the award are given the Joe Dumars trophy. Past recipients of the award include Stephen Curry, Kemba Walker, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, and Grant Hill.
- Joe played his entire 14-year career in the NBA with the Pistons. He later became an executive for Detroit and helped construct the team that won the 2004 NBA Championship. Detroit (led by Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace) defeated the Lakers (with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Karl Malone, and Gary Payton) in five games.
