Toni Kukoc, the “Croatian Sensation,” was one of the premiere basketball players in Europe before joining the NBA in 1993 at a time when European players were uncommon. Playing for the Chicago Bulls, he accepted a supporting role to Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen that helped propel the Bulls to three straight championships from 1996-1998.

At 6’10” tall, Toni had the handles of a guard. He had an all around game that many did not expect from a player his size. He could shoot, rebound, pass, and effectively attack the basket with the best in the game.

Awards and Honors

  • Toni was the FIBA World Championship MVP in 1990 and the Eurobasket MVP in 1991.
  • In 1991, Kukoc was named one of FIBA’s (International Basketball Federation) top 50 players of all time.
  • Toni was honored as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year after the 1995-96 season. A superstar in Europe before joining the Bulls, Kukoc was willing to sacrifice parts of his game for the good of the team.
  • Kukoc joined the Chicago Bulls for the 1993-94 season and became an integral part in the Bulls second three-peat as they became champions in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Those teams featured Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman.
  • In 2008, Toni was named one of the 50 Greatest Euroleague Contributors.

Points of Interest

  • Kukoc won silver medals at the Olympics in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea and in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. In 1988 he played for Yugoslavia and in 1992 he played for a Croatian team facing perhaps the greatest basketball team ever assembled – the USA Dream Team.
  • After listening to Bulls General Manager Jerry Krause praise the play of draft pick Toni Kukoc, Jordan and Pippen made it their personal mission to shut him down during their 1992 Olympic game against Croatia.
  • Tony is the last of the “Big Six” of European basketball players from the 1980’s who were pioneers for international players entering the NBA and helped to globalize the game. The other five were Vlade Divac, Arvydas Sabonis, Drazen Petrovic, Dino Radja, and Sarunas Marciulionis.
  • Kukoc registered the same number of professional basketball championships as the legendary Bill Russell, often considered the most successful player in team sports history. While Russell won his eleven titles in the NBA, Toni won four Yugoslavian championships, one Italian League championship and three Euroleague championships in addition to his three championships with the Bulls.
  • In his NBA career Toni played for the Bulls, Bucks, Hawks, and 76ers. He finished his career with averages of 11.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Those numbers don’t even begin to tell the story of the impact of Toni Kukoc on the basketball world.

Personal Autograph Interaction

We briefly met Toni Kukoc at the 2023 Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony Reception. Toni had left his table to go to a buffet table. After a few other fans approached him, Joshua and I asked him to sign our cards and take a selfie with us. He signed the 2020-21 Panini Hall of Fame cards. Toni was very kind to take a minute of his time to create a Hall of Fame memory for the two of us.

Thank you, Toni!
